The Week of November 21st to November 27th, 2016 “A Brief Look Back Into Tomorrow”

 

 

 

 

 

The new trading week began on Monday, November 21st with investors in some aw that post Trump election – most of the major North American markets were at or near multi-month or all-time highs.

 

 

 

McDonald’s Canada pulled off a marketing coup as the company announced that its McCafé brand of coffee had been picked at the official onboard brand of WestJet Airlines (WJA-T).

 

 

 

The shareholders’ of AQM Copper (AQM-V) were pleased to see their investment soar up by 50% to $0.23 on word that mining giant Teck Resources (TCK.B) was taking over the junior explorer and their flagship Zafranal copper/gold project in Peru in an all-cash deal of some $35-million.

 

 

 

Patriot One Technologies (PAT-V) shares surged up by 17% to $1.38 as the new Trump era market is attracted to their NForce CMR1000 concealed weapons detection systems.

 

 

 

With a different tale from opposite sides of the border – Just as U.S. President elect Donald Trump is telling Americans that he will revive their once great coal industry, the Canadian federal government announced our country must phase out all coal fired electrical generation by the year 2030. And while Canada’s exit from the industry is estimated to reduce our carbon emissions by about 5-megatonnes over the next 15-years –  it is estimated that China will be adding hundreds of megatonnes of carbon over the same period.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 22nd saw most of the high flying marijuana stocks go negative on word the Donald Trump government may not be as tolerant of the expansion of the use of cannabis as the current administration has been. Meanwhile, the Canadian Department of Veteran Affairs announced lower medical cannabis user levels.

 

 

 

Lithium Americas (LAC-T) shares’ rose by 14% to $0.81 after the company announced its clay mineral subsidiary RheoMinerals had entered into an Technical Assistance and Royalty Agreement with the Delmon Group of Companies of Saudi Arabia to supply specialty additives for their oil based drilling fluids.

 

 

 

A recent United Nations report revealed that from a low of 2.2% in Nigeria to a high of 98.2% in Iceland – 47% of the world’s people now use the internet.

 

 

 

The World Intellectual Property Organization announced on Wednesday, November 23rd that China has just become the first country to file for over 1-million patents in a single year.

 

 

 

Organigram Holdings (OGI-V) shares’ soared up by almost 25.5% to $3.30 after the company was chosen as the exclusive Canadian cannabis supplier to the Trailer Park Boys.

 

 

 

The price of Deere & Co. (DE-N) stock rose by 11% to US$102.17 after the giant equipment supplier reported an improvement in market conditions.

 

 

 

Eli Lily (LLY-N) shares’ fell by 10.5% to US$67.99 after the big pharmaceutical company announced its Alzheimer’s treatment drug solanezumab failed to slow the progress of the brain disease.

 

 

 

The Canadian markets dragged themselves through the day on Thursday, November 24th as their southern cousins were closed for American Thanksgiving.

 

 

 

The interest in base metal stocks expands to nickel as the prise of Cuban nickel miner Sherritt International (S-T) surged up by almost 21% to a year high closing price of $1.45.

 

 

 

The share price of Moovly Media (MVY-V) rose by 14% to $0.29 after the multimedia company reported it had reached the 1-million registered user level.

 

 

 

Friday, November 25th revealed that the federal Liberals really knows how to spend our money as Finance Canada reported the new federal government’s deficit grew by another $2.4-billion id September, bringing the deficit for the first half of the fiscal year to $7.8-billion, as opposed to a $1.6-billion surplus for the same 6-months one year earlier.

 

 

 

Volkswagen Canada announced they will not offer any diesel powered vehicles in the 2017 model year as the company continues to deal with the ramifications of last year’s rigged emissions scandal.

 

 

 

The price of Capital Power (CPX-T) and TransAlta Corp. (TA-T) soared up by 9.5% and 17% respectively after the Province of Alberta agreed to compensate the province’s power generators up to $1.36-billion in their efforts to phase out of coal fired power generation.

 

 

 

Retailers on both sides of the border reported healthy consumer traffic on Black Friday while Adobe reported that American internet sales rose by 21.6% over the same day last year to US$3.34-billion.

 

 

 

During the Week – the TSX rose to a new 18-month high of 15,081, while the Dow Industrials, S&P 500 and NASDAQ reached new respective all-time highs of 19,152, 2,213 and 5,398. Going the other way – gold bullion fell to a 9-month low of US$1,181 while copper rose to a 11/2-year high of US$2.68. The CRB Spot Commodity Index rose to a          5-month high of 417 and the VIX fell to a 2-month low of 12.43.

 

 

 

Finning International (FTT-T) at $26.85, Manulife Financial (MFC-T) at $23.85 and Suncor Energy (SU-T) at $43.08 all set new TSX 52-week trading highs while Hudson’s Bay (HBC-T) at $13.88, Logistec Corp. (LGT.A-T) at $36.52 and Uranium Participation (U-T) at $3.50 all dropped to new 52-week trading lows.

 

 

 

For the Week – the Dow Industrials rose by 1.51% to 19,152, with the S&P 500 up by 1.42% to 2,213 and the NASDAQ Exchange ahead by 1.43% to 5,398. To the north, the TSX composite Index gained 1.42% to 15,075 while the TSX Venture Exchange fell by 1.61% to 735.

 

 

 

With Commoditiesgold bullion fell by 2.32% to US$1,181, while copper gained 8.06% to US$2.68, with crude oil down by 0.86% to US$45.96 and natural gas was up by 7.05% to US$3.19. Overall, the CRB Spot Commodities Index rose by 1.21% to finish the week at 417.

 

 

 

The Canadian dollar softened by 0.19% against the American dollar to end the week at US$0.7392.

 

 

 

And the closely watched CBOE Volatility Index or VIX eased by another 0.51-point to finish the week at a somewhat calmer level of 12.34.
