Tłı̨chǫ Government and Fortescue sign MOU at AME Roundup

At the Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) today, Tłı̨chǫ Government (TG), based out of the Northwest Territories and Fortescue, a global technology, energy, and metals group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The MOU outlines a mutually beneficial framework for TG and Fortescue and creates the foundation for the shared interests in possible future mining opportunities.

The MOU also:

  • Helps Tłı̨chǫ Government gain a better understanding of the mineral potential in the Tłı̨chǫ Lands,
  • Signals TG’s openness to working with good industry partners and
  • Assists the TG in building the knowledge and capacity required to independently undertake geological surveys of Tłı̨chǫ lands going forward.

One of the first areas of TG and Fortescue’s focus is an assessment of lithium potential on Tłı̨chǫ lands. In particular, the TG wishes to understand the potential for the economic mineral systems Lithium – Caesium – Tantalum (“LCT”) Pegmatites in certain portions of the Tłı̨chǫ Lands.

Quotes:

Today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Tłı̨chǫ Government and Fortescue marks a milestone in the development of potential mining opportunities in the Tłı̨chǫ lands. Our commitment to developing shared knowledge through effective partnerships with responsible global leaders will protect our culture and traditions and ensure the safety of our land and wildlife. We look forward to working with Fortescue to explore future opportunities and, based on informed research and planning, build a brighter future for our communities. – Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty

“Fortescue was founded as an exploration company and we still believe that early stage exploration is the key to unlocking significant value.

“Today marks an important milestone in our shared journey with the Tłı̨chǫ Government. This agreement is a testament to the innovative and collaborative spirit that defines the Tlicho people and together, we have the opportunity to set a new standard for resource development—one that places people, culture, and the environment at its core.” – Fortescue Director Approvals, Communities and Environment, Warren Fish

Consistent with TG’s commitment to developing and supporting sustainable, environmentally responsible employment opportunities for Tłı̨chǫ citizens, Fortescue has a strong track record in Indigenous training and employment programs in mining.

This MOU will guide ongoing exploration and research while ensuring respect for the cultural significance and traditional knowledge of the Tłı̨chǫ.
