“So what else is BacTech doing, apart from the plant in Ecuador?”

 

 

 

 

 

It’s the question we’re asked more than any other, usually right after someone has read about Tenguel. And it’s a fair one — Ecuador is the project with a plant you can point at, and it’s natural to wonder whether it’s the whole story. So, this Sunday, pour the coffee and let us walk you around the rest of the workshop.

Start with the thing you can’t photograph: the technology itself. Over the past fifteen months we’ve been quietly turning decades of bioleaching know-how into a protected estate. Our Zero Tailings™ process — the flowsheet that takes sulphide mine waste and converts it into metals, fertiliser, iron products and clean, reusable residue — is now the subject of patent applications filed in the United States and Canada, with Australia, the European Union and South American filings in preparation. Patents don’t make headlines the way gold pours do, but they are the foundation everything else stands on: they are what makes BacTech a technology company that deploys projects, rather than a mining company with a clever trick.

Then there’s the question our chemists get asked at dinner parties: you can really make fertiliser out of pollution? Yes — and that single fact explains most of what we’re doing beyond Ecuador. The sulphur locked in old mine waste, the stuff that turns rivers orange when it weathers into acid, is the same sulphur the world’s farmers pay to put on their fields as ammonium sulphate. The iron beside it can become magnetite for cleaner steelmaking. What the last century called a liability; our process treats as an orebody. Once you see mine waste that way, you start seeing opportunity on every continent — because a century of mining left a great deal of it behind.

And that is precisely where our desks are pointed. In Canada, home turf, independent laboratory work is underway with our research partners on the fertiliser and iron products our process generates from nickel-belt tailings — the unglamorous, essential work of proving product quality before anyone talks about plants.  In South America — where the Andes hold some of the largest legacy tailings deposits on Earth — we are in the process of creating a subsidiary that will allow us to look at tailings projects that are a ward of the state. Many of these tails contain arsenic along with gold, silver and copper so we believe we can acquire them without any competition. In Europe, we’ve been invited into conversations in one of the world’s oldest mining districts, where governments and universities are actively looking for exactly what Zero Tailings™ does: a way to turn remediation from a cost into an industry. And enquiries keep arriving — most recently from Asia — each of which enters the same disciplined filter: does the mineralogy suit our chemistry? Only if the science says yes does anything go further.

Notice what’s common to all of it: nothing above is a promise, and we’d rather it stayed that way. We’re a listed company, and we hold ourselves to a simple rule — we announce signatures, not hopes. What we can tell you is that behind each of these threads sits the same deliberate sequence: first the science, then the test-work, then the agreement, and only then the press release. Ecuador itself walked exactly that path, which is why there’s a plant fully permitted awaiting financing and ultimately construction. The rest of the pipeline is walking it now, each at its own pace — some steps small, like a paid technical assessment; some larger, like a university test-work programme; and one day, we hope, some very large plants indeed.

So, the honest answer to this Sunday’s question is rather a lot — patiently, and in the right order. Ecuador is not the story; Ecuador is the proof. The story is a technology, now protected on three continents, being fitted one careful step at a time to a world that has finally started asking what to do with its mining past.
