Prospector News Podcast – Dave Lawie: The Problem with Copper

The Prospector News Publisher, Michael Fox is Joined by IMDEX Chief Geoscientist Dave Lawie as we discuss their recent paper title “The Problem With Copper”

The problem with copper is not copper itself but the increasing demand due to decarbonization outstripping the availability of supply. It is estimated that we will need 5 -7 major copper mines to open in the next ten years just to keep up with current demand and the expectation is for double that to satisfy the needs brought on by the new green economy. It is quite probable at this point that the decarbonization movement could be derailed by supply constraints.

We discuss various solutions includin, technological advancements, exchanging copper for other product to limit demand growth and government interventions. We discuss why copper isn’t being included in the list of “Critical Minerals” in spite of its importance. Finally we openly wonder if wartime like rationing of copper might end up being required to direct the supply to decarbonization.
