Prospector Podcast – Revitalizing Pine Point: CEO Jeff Hussey on Mining, Community, and Future Opportunities

In this episode, Michael Fox interviews Jeff Hussey, President and CEO of Pine Point Mining, who discusses the company’s journey and current projects.

Background and Joint Venture

Jeff explains that Pine Point Mining originated from Osisko Metals, which was established in 2017. In 2023, they created Pine Point Mining Limited, a joint venture with Appian Capital Advisory, in a transaction that secured approximately $100 million to advance the project towards a financial investment decision and permitting processes.

Project Development and Community Engagement

Jeff highlights the project’s progress, including successful winter drilling campaigns and the ongoing feasibility study, which is expected to be completed by June 30th. Jeff emphasizes the critical role of community and government engagement in permitting, expressing optimism due to Appian’s interest and Osisko’s strong regional track record. Pine Point Zinc Mine History Jeff shares insights into the Pine Point zinc mine’s history, noting its closure in 1988 and the fact that it historically produced some of the purest zinc and lead concentrates in the world. The mine’s mineralization is hosted in carbonate rocks with minimal heavy metals, leading to a strategic drilling approach to support the feasibility study.

Company Growth and Community Collaboration

The company has evolved from managing an 18,000-line Excel spreadsheet to developing a comprehensive 3D block model for resource management. Jeff underscores the importance of collaboration with local communities, particularly the Deninu Kue First Nation, the Northwest Territories Métis Nation, and the Katl’odeeche First Nation, whose support has allowed Pine Point to expand its land position significantly.

Geographical Context and Community Impact

Jeff discusses the geographical context of surrounding communities like the Deninu Kue First Nation and Hay River, known as the “Hub of the North.” Jeff mentions ongoing negotiations for power supply from the Taltson Hydro dam, highlighting potential benefits for local employment as they work towards reopening the mine. Future Prospects Jeff concludes by discussing the feasibility study stage and refining benefit agreements with local communities. The reopening of Pine Point promises employment opportunities and joint venture prospects as they prepare for a developer’s assessment report by year-end. This episode provides valuable insights into Pine Point Mining’s strategic initiatives and its commitment to community engagement as they progress toward revitalizing a historically significant mining site.
