Prospector News Publisher Michael Fox, speaks with Hereditary Chief Roy Jones of the Haida Nation and Brian Mountain of the Cree Nation about Mazini Energy an Indigenous owned energy company who wants to build generational wealth for First Nations as the world moves towards “Green Energy.” We discuss how First Nations not only need to be at the table but also need to be active participants in the Transition.
Brian speaks of building a legacy for 7 generations. The key to this is the current relations are a result of the 7 generations that have passed since the beginning of Confederation. Brian would like to see changes that moving forward will bring opportunities for the next 7 generations. Chief Roy speaks on how nuclear energy and Small Modular reactors will bring significant changes to the remote communities where most First Nations live. He notes that not only do these communities need to embrace the new energy they must be trained so First Nations people are bringing this energy to these communities. He speaks of how working with Universities such as McMaster to provide educational opportunities can be game changes for these communities. We speak further with Brian about the Mandate Letter given by the Alberta Premier to the Department of Energy and Mining, stating that First Nations must be included in the extraction of Critical Minerals in Alberta.
We discuss what this means and the opportunities it will provide. Further to the letter we discuss with Chief Roy how to open engagement and discussions about sharing in the opportunities with groups who are not used to being engaged and will look upon it suspiciously.
Finally we discuss how it is important to follow words with meaningful action. The unfortunately is a history of Government and Industry saying one thing and doing another. As my friend Ellis Martin says “I hear what you are saying but I see what you are doing”
