Nearly 700 Megawatts of Energy Storage Capacity Have Been Announced in 2014-2015, According to Navigant Research Tracker

A new Tracker report from Navigant Research provides a comprehensive resource of energy storage projects worldwide, including information on 804 projects encompassing more than 12,000 individual systems.

2014 was a major year for the global energy storage industry, with some of the largest single contracts in history awarded to leading storage companies. Driven primarily by regulatory mandates in the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific, the industry took significant steps forward. According to a new Tracker report from Navigant Research, 696.7 megawatts (MW) of energy storage projects were announced from the third quarter of 2014 to the first quarter of 2015.

“Driven by government support at the state and federal levels, North America leads the world in terms of recently announced energy storage projects,” says Anissa Dehamna, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “California alone accounts for more than one-quarter of new project announcements in the 2014-2015 period.”

The rise in popularity of lithium ion (Li-ion) technology has continued, according to the report. In 2014, there were 64 newly announced Li-ion battery projects, representing 562.0 MW of capacity, or around 80% of all newly announced projects during that time period. There were also 25 Li-ion projects commissioned during this time period, accounting for 62.4 MW of new capacity coming online.

The report, “Energy Storage Tracker 1Q15,” provides a comprehensive resource of energy storage projects worldwide. The Tracker includes a database of 804 projects (encompassing 12,122 individual systems down to the residential level) and tracks the country, region, market segment, capacity, status, technology vendor, systems integrator, applications, funding, investment, and key milestones of each project. It also includes an analysis of the technology choice within each major region for energy storage, analysis of the leading regions for energy storage capacity and projects, and market share analysis for technology vendors for deployed projects and projects in the pipeline. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
